Apple today released iOS 4.3.3, bringing several fixes and improvements to Apple's operating system for mobile devices, including addressing bugs cited in the recent location-tracking controversy. The build number is 8J2 for the majority of devices, with the CDMA iPad 2 receiving Build 8J3. A separate iOS 4.2.8 build 8E401 is also available for the CDMA iPhone 4.

This update contains changes to the iOS crowd-sourced location database cache including:

- Reduces the size of the cache
- No longer backs the cache up to iTunes
- Deletes the cache entirely when Location Services is turned off

BGR reported just two days ago that it had gotten its hands on iOS 4.3.3, claiming that the update also brings battery life improvements and iPod bug fixes.

When was the last time we saw a maintenance release that actually addressed real issues with the OS?

I miss the days when an update would say: "Addresses general stability, bug fixes, and performance improvements."

Anyone know if there's an app that saves similar data? I travel a fair bit and found the mapping quite nice to display.

When is Apple going to figure out how to implement software patches instead of forcing people to download a whole copy of the OS for every little update?

Nope, your device is no longer supported by apple.
That's not a good argument. You forget that this is not a feature. It's a matter of privacy and how iOS uses your data.

So, to me, Apple must give a fix to 3G users too. They can send iPhone 3G users a 4.2.2 for example.
