The iPhone 3GS is still holding strong in the U.S. smartphone market, ranking as the second most popular handset during the second quarter. Last week, we noted that we had received a tip that Best Buy would be offering an even better deal on the iPhone 3GS for today only, dropping the price to free with a two-year contract. That deal has indeed gone live today, with the free iPhone 3GS being selected as Best Buy's "Deal of the Day".

Best Buy offered an identical promotion last December.

Tied into a two year contract with a phone that probably only has a reasonable life of one year before it stops receiving updates?
