AppleCare Prepping for October 10th Launch of iOS 5?

Tuesday September 13, 2011 10:14 am PDT by Eric Slivka

ios5 icon A source connected to Apple's AppleCare customer service call centers has reportedly indicated to AppleInsider that the company is expecting a large influx of iOS-related support calls beginning Monday, October 10th, potentially signaling a release of iOS 5 to current users on that date.

For instance, one person familiar with the matter said his local AppleCare call center has been told to expect an eightfold increase in customer calls on that day, and that staff are being advised ahead of time for the increased traffic.

The person could not say with any certainty what will be released on that Monday, but noted that the increase in call volume is related to iOS. This led them to speculate that Apple could release iOS 5 and iCloud on Oct. 10.

Apple has in the past released iOS major updates a few days ahead of the new hardware running the operating system, spreading out demand for support services.

- 2008: iPhone OS 2.0 and iPhone 3G both released on July 11th
- 2009: iPhone OS 3.0 released on June 17th, iPhone 3GS released on June 19th
- 2010: iOS 4.0 released on June 21st, iPhone 4 released on June 24th

A planned October 10th debut of iOS 5 for existing hardware lines up nicely with current rumors of Apple shooting for October 5th for final carrier certification of the new operating system and a "mid-October" release of the new hardware, perhaps at the end of that week.

RIP, MacBook Ultra

Monday October 19, 2026 9:37 am PDT by Joe Rossignol

Apple today sent out invites for an experience in Los Angeles on Wednesday, October 28, and the "Pro and tell" tagline on the invitation likely means that the rumored MacBook models with touch-enabled OLED displays will stick with MacBook Pro branding instead of the once-rumored "MacBook Ultra" name. The long-rumored "iPhone Ultra" ended up being named iPhone Duo, so speculation that Apple...

All this hoopla on IOS betas and anticipated releases dates is becoming nauseating. Apple makes a small variety of handsets compared to other vendors and it has taken them so long to get this one out that both the OS and the new hardware better be worth all this wait. I have been in iPhone user since day one, but my son was home the other day, an ATT employee with his Android handset and let me tell you, it looked damned good.

Letting their product slip beyond their normal release cycles is a faux pas in my opinion. I am giving them until the end of October. If it isn't out by then, my next handset will be an Android based product.

I hope your Android phone is everything you want and more, and provides you nothing but happiness. If you really want to switch then nothing can be said to dissuade you and you will do it regardless of Apples actions.

Thank you for announcing it though

I just want to point something out:

October 10th is Thanksgiving here in Canada, which doesn't seem like an ideal day to release a new product.

I just want to point something out:

Apple Inc. is an American company, they don't really care too much about Canadian holidays.

Monday October 10th is a regular work day in Cupertino, California and shares of AAPL will be trading on the Nasdaq exchange all day.

If Apple Inc. had to worry about holidays in all of the markets where they sell products, there wouldn't be any days left for them to make announcements.

What I do like about the Android high end phones is the size of the display. While too big wouldn't be good the HTC I saw was great and it fit into my shirt pocket.

You carry your phone around in your shirt pocket? You're right, please go represent Android fan boys instead.
