Screen Shot 3Encrypted messaging platform Telegram has received an update that brings a new silent messaging feature to the app, amongst other things.

After applying the update, Telegram lets you send a message to someone and their device won't make an audible notification sound when they receive it, even if they forgot to enable Do Not Disturb mode.

Holding the Send button reveals the new option to have a message or media delivered without sound. Telegram suggests the feature means you can now message friends freely even when you know they are sleeping, studying or attending a meeting.

In the Group Permissions section, users will also find a new Slow Mode switch. With this enabled, members of a group chat are only able to send one message per the interval chosen by the group owner. Optional slow mode intervals span from 30 seconds to one hour.

The idea behind the feature is to make conversations in the group more orderly, while raising the value of each individual message. Admins can keep it on permanently, or toggle as necessary to throttle rush hour traffic.

Elsewhere in this update, group owners can now set custom titles for individual admins, videos now display thumbnail previews as you scrub through, and tapping on a timestamp plays the video from the right spot. There's also new animated emojis and new accent colors for the app's various night themes.

Telegram is a free download for iPhone and iPad from the App Store. [Direct Link]

Besides iMessage, best alternative to Whatsapp with tons of features and customisations.

Not to mention no need to backup your messages whenever you change an iPhone or even to Android + the desktop application is actually useful.

Great features. However, I still won’t use because I don’t like the idea of people having the ability to DELETE messages they sent to me.
I have been a longtime user and when this delete was added I was weary. But I actually haven’t been bothered by it. I think it is now actually a good thing. If there is something you want for proof for some reason... take a screen shot. But the idea of owning your own content even after sending is a good feeling.
[doublepost=1565617829][/doublepost]Telegram is by far the best messenger. I have managed to move over my family and friends. A selling point for my friends who have kids is the secret chats with auto delete. They can talk to their spouse and not have to worry about their kids picking up their phone and reading “adult” stuff.

Is it though? It may have more features than Signal but certainly not more secure AFAIK. I guess it depends on how you are measuring "best."
Agreed. I think Signal is the best but I would use Telegram over WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger any day. Sadly the majority of people in the US are still stuck on iMessage or Facebook Messenger.

The press release also nearly mentioned “you are now able to send them messages even when their husbands are around.”
