Not worth getting the Air or regular iPad at this point until they’re updated with Pencil 2 support, hopefully in a month.
I wouldn’t bank on it. I bet they support the first Apple Pencil on the rumored 10.2” iPad.

I use a 2019 iPad Air with the Apple Leather Sleeve w/ Pencil holder and it’s honestly great.

My understanding is that the drawing performance between Pencil 1 and 2 is exactly the same. You just get the benefits of it not rolling for days across the table, no cap to lose, touch gestures on the accessory, and that it is a bit shorter in length. Personally, I feel like the cost to jump to these features right now isn’t compelling to your mid-range iPad folk.

Personally I got a Logitech Crayon for my 2019 Air when it was recently on sale for $50. Perfectly fine for my purposes (PDF highlighting and markup, drawing and some note taking, I have no use for pressure sensitivity) and half the price. Quite happy with the Air.
