Tim Cook Visits China for the Third Time in 2026

Tim Cook is visiting China for the third time this year, with talks in Guangdong focused on expanding Apple's manufacturing and sales operations, the South China Morning Post reports.

Tim Cook Chengdu China

This is Cook's first China trip in his capacity as Apple's executive chairman. He moved into the position on September 1 when John Ternus took over as CEO. Apple has said part of Cook's work involves relationships with government policymakers.

On October 11, Cook reportedly held talks with Guangdong governor Meng Fanli. Suppliers and partners located in Guangdong play a major role in Apple's business in China, and Cook is said to have expressed interest in doing more locally through smart manufacturing and additional sales channels. Meng said the province would support further expansion, including research and development.

In Guangzhou, a creator used an iPhone 18 Pro to capture martial arts footage while Cook watched. Cook posted "Great to be back in China!" on Weibo on Saturday. Customers also reported a visit to one of Guangzhou's Apple Stores on Sunday.

Cook traveled to Chengdu and Beijing in March as Apple celebrated its 50th anniversary, and addressed the China Development Forum. In May, he was among the business leaders who accompanied President Donald Trump for talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The trip comes several weeks after sales of the ‌iPhone 18 Pro‌ and ‌iPhone 18 Pro‌ Max started. Counterpoint Research put Apple first in China's smartphone sales ranking for September 14 to 20. During their first three days on sale in China, the new Pro phones sold 12% more units than their predecessors had managed over the full first week of availability last year.

Any time Cook or Apple had a major announcement regarding moving production (or parts of it) outside of China, for some of the first times since starting, all of a sudden there were power outages in certain factories. And when tooling was attempted to be moved out of the country, suddenly trucks were breaking down or events happening that prevented it. It's really scary stuff. Apple, and I guess Us as the consumers created a monster here.
We did (create a monster)

At the same time we are opening forum posts about whether to buy that Duo or not. 😉

Whether we like it or not, China has established itself as the factory of the world. Those jobs are never coming back because the same hardware would be unaffordable if it were made here.

I some way, we are all hypocrites.

It can also become pretty tedious. It depends on where and how often you are going plus how you are getting there (commercial vs. private).

They're never coming back here (UK, Europe, US etc).

But there are other parts of the world (India, Africa, other Asian countries) where manufacturing is lower cost than here, just as much talent and human power but much more humane political ecosystems that care for the people assembling things much better, and even the environment (relatively speaking).

I am happy that Apple, with all its money and weight and power and expertise, seems to agree and is certainly doing more behind the scenes, rather sensitively I'm sure, to slowly remove the Jenga blocks and avoid disaster so that sure, it can do some work there but maybe spread out the risk geographically and perhaps someday use its influence for good in those countries where things are... not so ideal for human rights.
I don’t know if working conditions in India are better than they are in China.

I doubt it.

I also think that the only reason Apple looks at India (for example) for producing is because of recent tariff isues. India probably isn’t as cheap as China but still cheaper than dealing with tariffs.

I don’t think Apple makes the India decision out of the goodness of its heart. They are a business after all.
