RIP, homeOS

homeOS2MacRumors was first to reveal the name "HomeView" last week, after discovering a trademark filing from a secretive shell company that we correctly suspected was linked to Apple.

Apple was likely behind a "homeOS" trademark filing as well, but the company ultimately decided to stick with generic "HomeView software" naming, just like it refers to the HomePod's operating system as "HomePod software." For example, the device will ship with "HomeView software version 27.2."

Yes.

No.

A rumor requires a source. That source may be making things up, or they may be correct, but they're a source nonetheless. That source is not some MR writer speculating, but rather someone with supposed inside knowledge.
It's pointless semantics but I disagree.

They wrote

"homeOS" has been referenced in various other places in the past, including in Apple job listings ('https://www.geekwebguides.com/2021/11/03/apple-refers-to-homeos-job-listings/'), and in tvOS 17.4 code discovered by MacRumors ('https://www.geekwebguides.com/2024/01/29/tvos-17-4-homeos-mention/'). It could end up being the name of the software platform that powers Apple's long-rumored smart home hub ('https://www.geekwebguides.com/roundup/apple-homeview/'), which has been described as a HomePod with a screen. The device will reportedly have a square iPad-like screen that can be attached to a speaker base or mounted on a wall."

That's quite simply a rumour based on the source being someone, who they think could be Apple registered a trademark that they think could be the name of the OS. The only fact in there is that someone registered a trademark, they don't know it's Apple and they don't know why - so it became a rumour that there was going to be a homeOS. There wasn't, it was wrong. End of rumour.

And certainly not "homeOS dead" as this silly article points to.

It wasn’t a rumor, it was factual reporting that Apple was likely behind the registration of the trademark using a shell company. MacRumors never claimed the device would ship with an OS bearing that name. They made readership aware of the possibility, given *decades* of evidence of similar methods prior to new product introductions.

The same thing happened when Apple registered realityOS and xrOS through shell companies, ultimately choosing to go with visionOS in the end.

That still makes it a rumour.
