Mark Gurman: Apple Made 'Major Mistake' With iPhone Duo Pre-Orders

Sunday October 18, 2026 7:33 am PDT by
Despite knowing that the iPhone Duo would face "severe supply constraints" due to manufacturing challenges, Apple chose to begin iPhone Duo pre-orders on Friday instead of waiting until it had more inventory ready, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The should add iCloud pairing (like AirPods) so if you currently have and Apple Pencil Pro or an Apple Pencil USB-C synced with an iPad, it will automatically synced and work with the iPhone Duo.

People that have an Apple Pencil Pro already have a way of charging it: their iPad Pro.

IDK... I think his now infamous quote is often taken out of context. Or I should say, I never thought it was intended to be taken as literal as it was (and continues to be) or to have relevance this long after it was said. At the time he made that comment, Jan. 09, 2007, I always felt he was doing so for at least three reasons:
1) to take a jab at the then current slew of smart phones that leveraged goofy styli to navigate their OSes
2) to get a laugh (which he certainly did)
3) as a way to highlight the revolutionary touchscreen of iPhone

Steve was a showman, after all. And that carefully crafted line had the intended effect. At that time. Add for some, still does almost 20 yrs later. Also worth noting, Steve said LOT of things that were meant for effect rather than being literal or factual or standing the test of time. Again, he was a true showman.

Just my take.
Bingo.

He also said a lot of things that were true in that moment and then changed his view later when the technology caught up. The stylus jab was definitely one of those. He was talking about a UI being designed for a stylus being crap (they were) and a UI designed for fingers was superior (it is!). That doesn’t mean a pencil for drawing or taking notes couldn’t be good for those purposes. They aren’t mutually exclusive.
