Apple Watch Ultra 1 vs. Ultra 4 Buyer's Guide: Is It Worth Upgrading?

The Apple Watch Ultra 4 arrives four years after the original model. Across three subsequent generations, Apple added a brighter and larger display, satellite connectivity, new health sensors, more capable chips, and longer battery life. For owners of the original Ultra, are those cumulative improvements enough to justify upgrading now, or can their existing watch last another year?

Both watches retain a 49mm titanium case, an Action button, a siren, dual-frequency GPS, and support for recreational diving to 40 meters. The Apple Watch Ultra 4 starts at $799 in the U.S. Apple discontinued the original Ultra in 2023, and it no longer supports the latest major watchOS release. Here are the key differences between the two models:

Existing first-generation Apple Watch Ultra owners can reasonably keep their watch for another year if its battery still covers their usual days and workouts. Losing support for ‌watchOS 27‌ is significant, but it does not prevent the original Ultra from continuing to handle notifications, activity tracking, navigation, and its other existing features. Owners satisfied with those capabilities may prefer to eke out another year of use and wait to see whether next year's model offers a more substantial upgrade.

However, the Ultra 4 is a worthwhile upgrade for anyone already running into the original model's limitations. The new Health Sensing System provides more detailed heart-rate and recovery insights, while sleep apnea and hypertension notifications expand its health capabilities. These changes are most compelling if you will use the additional information to follow changes in your daily condition or adjust your training.

Longer battery life and satellite connectivity strengthen the case for owners who record extended workouts or regularly travel beyond cellular coverage. If your original Apple Watch Ultra now struggles to finish an outing without charging, the improved battery life is a practical reason to replace it. The larger, brighter display, newer gestures, Audio Intelligence, and expanded Precision Finding support also make the cumulative upgrade more noticeable in everyday use.

Software support is a major reason to move on. The original Apple Watch Ultra cannot run watchOS 27, so it misses ‌Siri‌ AI and the latest operating system's other additions. If those features would materially improve how you use your watch, waiting another year means accepting those limitations in the meantime.

Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 Score 4/10 for Repairability

Wednesday October 7, 2026 2:44 pm PDT by
Repair site iFixit this week continued taking apart the latest Apple devices, this time tearing down the Apple Watch Series 12 and the Apple Watch Ultra 4. The Apple Watch Ultra 4 has no repairability changes. There are copious amounts of glue between the casing and the display for waterproofing, and getting to the battery has to be done through the screen. It's easy to slice through the...

Meh. The u1 is fine. I’m off the upgrade hamster wheel. It’s not going to change my life.

I agree with this sentiment. It’s truly sad for Apple to artificially cut support, but here it was probably not artificial but rather WatchOS being full of terrible software implementation or the fact the original only had 1GB of memory. Back when Apple could “afford” to throw enough memory into these things to allow them to last more than four years, they chose not to focused instead on making it a disposable toy.
That's still true today.

They're only packing 4GB of RAM into the U4 while also pushing it full of Siri AI which is a memory hog. Meaning, the U4 isn't positioned well to absorb new Siri AI features and will likely be quickly obsolete.

A shame really.

Switching from Ultra 1 to Ultra 4 is like night and day. I don't think this article properly articulates just how much faster the S11 chip is over the S8. The Ultra 4 is so quick and snappy. The battery life is fantastic compared to the Ultra 1. I am so glad I upgraded finally.

I begrudgingly upgraded from Ultra 1 due to Apple’s processor upgrade cycle (every 3 years, this being the 1st year of the new cycle), and I’m glad I did. My Ultra 1 worked ok, but the Ultra 4 is so much faster and has nice quality of life upgrades.

My biggest complaints about my Ultra 1 was that it was slow and Siri was very slow and unreliable, and Ultra 4 seems to have fixed both. The Ultra 4 is so speedy it makes the Ultra 1 look like it has a 30Hz display in comparison. Battery life is much longer, all of the complications and widgets update much more frequently and more quickly, and the upgraded health sensors are very nice to have.

I charged my Apple Watch Ultra 1 to 80% this morning, and after 12 hours of normal use, it’s still at 54%. On days when I work out, it usually drops to around 30%.

Since I don’t need the latest features, I can see myself keeping it for a few more years. It might even be my last smartwatch unless something truly revolutionary comes along.
