XP is 10 years old. Let it go, move on.
Microsoft actually support their products for much longer than Apple. Which results in continued developer support. Windows XP can be as old as it wishes, people will still use it as long as it is in support. And people will probably continue to use it after as well.

Not everyone can see the need or has the money to buy a new computer every 3 years like Apple want.

XP is not the latest OS to be sure, but it will be supported until 2014 so it's not completely on the scrap heap. I use it on my Macbook at work every day; it has been reliable and sufficient for what I need.

What about for those of us running 4.0?

Erm, yea, I'm confused about this release. I'm on 4.0... (I assume that's because of Lion?). Not sure I understand this release...

4.0 is the version of Boot Camp assistant that runs in Lion.

3.3 is the version of Boot Camp that runs in Windows 7.

They're 2 completely different programs.

I just run income tax efiling programs

Many of these programs are still at a MSDOS level of OS requirement. Given that XP should do for a few more years now. If I did something that needed more power then I would think about Windows7. One of my copies of XP Pro came with my Virtual PC program. The other copy I got at school for $10. Unless I go back to school I'd have to spend more than it is worth to me.

In some ways saying that Windows 7 is better than Lion is not saying much. I've been running Lion a lot of the time now. So far I am not very impressed. Looking at the disk usage graphs in the About This Mac menu choice, the iOS looks even though nice at what it is doing here, is really not ground breaking item but only shows that Mac OS 10.7 Lion may actually been dumbed done to the iOS level.
