Apple Releases Safari Technology Preview 16 With Bug Fixes and Feature Tweaks

by

safaripreviewiconApple today released another update for Safari Technology Preview, the experimental browser Apple first introduced in March of 2016. Apple designed the Safari Technology Preview to test features that may be introduced into future release versions of Safari.

Safari Technology Preview release 16 includes bug fixes and updates for URL parser, Gamepad API, CSS, Media, Fetch API, JavaScript, Web APIs, Web Inspector, and Accessibility.

As of release 14, Safari Technology Preview includes regular updates and bug fixes for Safari's WebDriver implementation.

The Safari Technology Preview update is available through the Software Update mechanism in the Mac App Store to anyone who has downloaded the browser. Versions are available for developers running both macOS Sierra and OS X El Capitan. Full release notes for the update are available on the Safari Technology Preview website.

Apple's goal with Safari Technology Preview is to gather feedback from developers and users on its browser development process. Safari Technology Preview can be run side-by-side with the existing Safari browser and while designed for developers, it does not require a developer account to download.

Still waiting for Safari to make a comeback, it's currently the lowest-scoring browser in the HTML5 test.

This update takes it from 415 points to 429 points on the HTML5 test so they're clearly heading in the right direction, but I agree, Apple needs to make a big push to bring Safari up to spec and to push updates more frequently. There's a stink amongst web development circles, no it isn't body odour, nor is it IE any more, sadly the browser they're all complaining about is Safari.

Article would have done well to mention that El Capitan will no longer get updates for Safari Tech Preview. Upgrading to El Cap pretty much broke all my development tools with SIP so I'm reluctant to jump on the Sierra bandwagon but this might just force my hand.
