Here's Apple's New Coffee Table Book With Actual Products

by

512 Pixels blogger Stephen Hackett has created a unique video showcasing Apple's new "Designed by Apple in California" coffee table book alongside actual Apple products, ranging from the PowerMac G5 to iPod socks.

The video helps bring the book to life by providing a nostalgic look back on the past two decades of Apple products, starting with the original iMac in 1998 through to the Apple Pencil in 2015. Hackett said most of what it is in the book is a part of his personal collection of Apple products.

MacRumors provided a hands-on look inside Apple's new book last week. "Designed by Apple in California" chronicles 20 years of Apple design with 450 photos of its products and the processes used to make them. The high-quality photos were taken by photographer Andrew Zuckerman.

Apple says it took eight years to design the linen-bound hardcover book, dedicated to late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. It features specially milled, custom-dyed paper with "gilded matte silver edges," and low-ghost ink. It is available now in a smaller 10.2×12.8 inches size for $199 and a larger 13×16.3 inches size for $299.

The book is also available at select Apple retail stores, including Apple Regent Street in London, Apple Opera in Paris, and Apple Ginza in Tokyo, among others. In the U.S., it is available in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, Dallas, San Francisco, and Palo Alto, and at Apple's campus store at its Cupertino headquarters.

Ah, that PowerMac G5 is just taunting us with an age when they actually made useful, repairable and upgradeable desktop computers.

Ha. It's a book! Please tell me Apple has something more interesting going on. Sorry not trying to be a hater, or "troll" as the kids would say. I'm a bit crabby today due to my 6S battery randomly dying.
I guess none of you watched Colbert the other night.... :D

Honestly, watching these videos and seeing all of these cool products is really nice. But, unfortunately, this book really seems more like a funeral program to me than anything. You see computers that were relatively easily upgradable; expandable. You see ports galore, color options left and right. You see a company that was exciting, fresh, new, going places.

Compared to today's stagnant iPhone designs (for 3+ iterations), the underpowered USB-C only MacBook "pro," the vanquished Mac Pro and Mac Mini, and the canceled Display and AirPort products, it's hard to see this book as something encouraging for the future. It's the past, and unfortunately I fear the past is not prologue for Apple. What we are seeing in today's Apple is merely an afterword, and this book is the appendix of all that Apple was.

Releasing a $300 book about your own greatness seems like a good sign the decision makers at Apple are inside a serious echo chamber.

:D:D Took eight years, yes a whole EIGHT years to design. What the actual f@ck do they do at Apple throughout the day? There's little wonder the machines and phones are slipping design wise if a book takes eight years to put together!

I've only ever used Macs and have done since 92 but they're becoming so pretensious and losing sight of their own customers that I'm debating my future choices..

$300 for a book is just taking the biscuit!

I've heard if you carefully slice between the back cover, it reveals a hidden page with the PowerBook G5.
