Placeholder for iOS 11 'Files' App Goes Live on App Store

This is really exciting, and showing that Apple is listening. I've been making do with iCloud drive but I am hoping that this will be a big improvement.


And i'm not sure it will be a default app. It seems like an app that, in reality, most (iPhone users in particular) people wont use. Maybe it will be default on iPad, or maybe it will just be a download or hidden app like iCloud drive.

iCloud Drive works very well for me. Looking forward to see what they've got in store though.

With just hours to go until Apple's WWDC keynote, a new placeholder app listing for a "Files" app ('https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/files/id1232058109?mt=8') has appeared on the iOS App Store for iPhone and iPad, as noticed by Steven Troughton-Smith ('http://twitter.com/stroughtonsmith/status/871602652320280576').



Details on the app are scant, as the app description is merely "Files for iOS" and there are no other details on the app other than an icon depicting a blue folder, although Troughton-Smith points out the app only supports 64-bit architectures. iOS 11 has been rumored to be dropping support for 32-bit apps, and Apple has been warning users ('https://www.geekwebguides.com/2016/10/06/ios-10-1-32-bit-app-alert/') about apps that have not been updated with 64-bit support.

As we noted in our iOS 11 wishlist feature ('https://www.geekwebguides.com/2017/05/25/macrumors-forums-ios-11-wishlist/'), file management is one area where MacRumors readers have been hoping to see improvement, and this upcoming Files app could help provide that.

The Files app is undoubtedly a default system app for iOS 11, but system apps that can be deleted have App Store entries to allow users to reinstall them. As Troughton-Smith notes, a listing for the Activity app has also appeared ('http://twitter.com/stroughtonsmith/status/871605025616916480') in the App Store, suggesting users will be able to delete the app in iOS 11, something that is not currently possible.

I just hope that it it will be able to download files in this folder, that will allow opening files with different apps. Or that you will be able to send attachments in emails, which you can select from the files app.
Will have to be sandboxed though, and will be perhaps just work when you have a higher storage tier(64gb and higher).
But it certainly is promising, i would not get my hopes up too high though, it could be a start of something big, but will probably be very limited for now.

I don't see how a file manager will be beneficial for iPhone users.

I'll admit having a file manager on the iPhone running Phone OS isnt that intriguing. Although, not having a file manager on a tablet that labels itself Pro is beyond pathetic.
