Apple Releases Safari Technology Preview 73 With Bug Fixes and Performance Improvements

by

safaripreviewiconApple today released a new update for Safari Technology Preview, the experimental browser Apple first introduced in March 2016. Apple designed the Safari Technology Preview to test features that may be introduced into future release versions of Safari.

Safari Technology Preview release 73 includes bug fixes and performance improvements for Web API, JavaScript, CSS, Media, WebRTC, Web Animations, Web Authentication, WebGPU, and Web Inspector.

The new Safari Technology Preview update is available for both macOS High Sierra and macOS Mojave, the newest version of the Mac operating system that was released to the public in September 2018.

The Safari Technology Preview update is available through the Software Update mechanism in the Mac App Store to anyone who has downloaded the browser. Full release notes for the update are available on the Safari Technology Preview website.

Apple’s aim with Safari Technology Preview is to gather feedback from developers and users on its browser development process. Safari Technology Preview can run side-by-side with the existing Safari browser and while designed for developers, it does not require a developer account to download.

I think you're confusing with Microsoft. They gave up Edge development and went Chromium.

Does Apple still work on Safari? I thought they gave it up.
The unfortunate state of affairs now is that the only two significant web rendering engines being developed are WebKit and Blink, which is a fork of WebKit. Both Edge and Firefox will soon be relying on Chrome's Blink renderer.

Monocultures are bad. It's not hard to imagine a scenario where a major security bug is found which could affect basically 100% of web browsers.

Yeah, finally, I can't believe Apple allowed this function to be so screwed on Safari. I mean, scrolling through a video on YouTube is one of the first things a customer is going to try on its new device. I tried several times to scroll through a YouTube video with the TouchBar and it was impossible. I can't believe this took them two years to be fixed.
Now we need 4k codec on safari

The inventors and 90% contributors aren't giving up on WebKit 2 that is integral to iOS, tvOS, macOS and watchOS.

WebGPU getting Metal shading sure is going to be nice once it's fully implemented. WebRTC updates are welcome as well
