Apple Announces Businesses Can Accept iPhone IDs Later This Year

Apple today announced that iPhone users will be able to present a driver's license or ID stored in the Wallet app at participating businesses and venues starting later this year. Users will simply hold their iPhone or Apple Watch near the business's iPhone to verify their age and identity for things like alcohol, rental cars, and more.

Apple Wallet IDs Businesses Feature
Users will be shown what information is being requested and whether the receiving party will be storing the information, according to Apple. Users will then be asked to authenticate and consent by using Face ID or Touch ID. No additional hardware beyond an iPhone is required for the business to offer this functionality.

Apple announced this feature in a press release covering several new services-related features coming to iOS 17, iPadOS 17, macOS Sonoma, watchOS 10, and tvOS 17 later this year. Another feature announced includes the ability to set up recurring Apple Cash payments in the Wallet app, on a weekly, biweekly, or monthly basis.

I won’t be needing this much. I just present my face to the bouncer or clerk and they immediately know I’m old enough to enter or to buy. And no privacy concerns!

True, but think of some countries you may visit and their lack of technology. I would always want hard copies of those things.
Passports are going to be a very tricky one, because you kind of need the entire world to cooperate. They can't even get the rest of the world to just accept passport cards yet, and the airlines flat out refuse them for international travel.

It's encouraging from a privacy standpoint that this seems to adhere to the Principle of Least Privilege, by granting access (on a temporary basis) only for the items required.

It has never sat well with me that businesses (or malicious actors with access to the business's information) could gather, store, and profit from other personally identifiable information under the guise of verifying one's ID. They should receive only the information necessary for that particular transaction, with the consumer fully informed, and nothing more.

This is great - I hope iPhones can replace passports soon. It’s crazy we still use paper documents.
