How rich must people be to pay $139 per year for Amazon Prime? Imagine how much that is over 50 years.
Like with Costco, it's a matter of what you're buying and how much. If you have a handle on the going prices for necessities and you can get a deal from these vendors, then it doesn't take an excessive amount of purchases to justify not just subscribing, but committing to one of their cash back schemes. If you're not spending enough to at least cancel out the membership fee then your argument stands.

You have to buy at that vendor then though. That is the problem with that scheme. You basically pay Amazon $139 per year plus a guarantee that you will spend a lot of money on deals to get back those $139. That very much restricts your freedom of choice.

In Germany they offer a Canon EOS R6 Mark II for €2.199 Euros for Prime members, but only today. That is a very cheap price, as the cheapest price anywhere else is €2.629 at the moment. So Prime members get a €430 discount. That sounds nice, but the psychological pressure is the problem. Having just until midnight to decide if you really need that camera might lead to panic buying for some.

That is very American. Here people pay €60 or so for cable TV, phone and internet combined. The fees in the US are so over the top. I remember there was a boxing fight on cable TV in the US and they charged $99 just for streaming that one fight. Personally I do not have any streaming service subscription. All that stuff is available somewhere for free. Netflix even pays millions to criminals for their story. I do not support that.
different markets, big deal, tell me then whenever my relatives from Germany come to the US they bring an empty suitcase and go shopping here and take it home full? because some items (eg clothing) are MUCH cheaper here than in Germany ...

same could be said for so many other things, like in the older days $200+/month for cable TV, or for cloud services, or streaming music etc etc ...

How rich must people be to pay $139 per year for Amazon Prime? Imagine how much that is over 50 years.
Why imagine when you can do the math?

$139 x 50 = $6,950

But that's not accounting for the price increases -- it's gone up $20 every 4 years since 2014 when the price went from $79 to $99. If you've been a members since the beginning (in 2005 at $79 per year), and if Amazon sticks to their $20 price increase every 4 years, in 50 years you'll have spent just under $10,000.

But Amazon Prime isn't just about shopping and the free same-day or 2-day shipping benefits. There's also Prime Video, Amazon Music, Prime Reading, and more. If you don't have a need/use for those services (or shop at Whole Foods / Amazon Fresh), then Amazon Prime doesn't make sense for you.

It doesn't for me. But it does for 170 million-plus people in the U.S. (or 200 million-plus around the world).
