Apple Says iPhone 5s Now Obsolete as iPod Touch 6 Becomes 'Vintage'

Apple today made three changes to its vintage and obsolete products list, involving the iPhone 5s, sixth-generation iPod touch, and an older iMac model.

iPhone 5s
First, Apple now considers the iPhone 5s to be an "obsolete" product worldwide, meaning that Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers no longer offer repairs or other hardware service for the device. Apple says it considers a product "obsolete" once seven years have passed since the company last distributed it for sale.

Apple released the iPhone 5s in September 2013, with its key new feature being the Touch ID fingerprint sensor built into the Home button. The device also introduced the A7 chip, which was Apple's first iPhone chip with 64-bit architecture.

Second, the sixth-generation iPod touch and the late 2015 edition of the 21.5-inch iMac with a Retina 4K display are now classified as "vintage" products, as more than five years have passed since the company stopped distributing the devices for sale. Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers can continue to offer repairs for vintage products for up to two more years, but only if the necessary parts remain available.

The sixth-generation iPod touch was released in 2015, and it was the second-last model of the device. Apple discontinued the iPod touch line in 2022.

The iPhone 5S was an absolutely gorgeous design. The chamfered edge, the champagne color, the metal Apple logo. I still have mine in my tech drawer. I wish modern phone designs felt this “inspired” these days.

I still have my 1st gen iPhone SE, which if I recall is pretty much the exact same design with internal upgrades. At the time it felt just... normal, but now it feels like this special little mini-phone. I really wish phone carriers would let you have multiple phones on the same line, because I'd definitely boot it up and use it as a light "going out for an evening" phone.

The iPhone 5s was universally loved and it introduced Touch ID. What a great phone. No camera bump, no bending, 64-bit chip, seamless authentication with Touch ID, chamfered edges, beautiful color options -- the thing just felt like a piece of jewelry -- not a gadget.

Contrast that with the iPhone 6 the next year. Clunky rounded edges, camera bump, design that bends, bigger screen without upgraded RAM lead to performance issues due to shared memory between GPU and CPU -- the 6 series sold like crazy because it was a bigger iPhone but it was one of the least loved iPhones. The iPhone 6s series fixed the performance issues and the iPhone 7 series refined it further with camera improvements and some sweet color choices.

But, I don't think we will see a design as nice as the iPhone 5s again given that so much of the feel of that iPhone was due to its small size.
