Disney+ Gains New National Geographic Apple Vision Pro Immersive Environment, New 3D Movies

When watching content through the Disney+ streaming service, Vision Pro users can now opt into a new Immersive Environment that launched today.

Available from National Geographic, the Immersive Environment features views of the Thingvellir National Park in Iceland. The new environment will allow Disney+ subscribers on Vision Pro to experience the rocky terrain of Thingvellir National Park on a snowy winter day, complete with interactive elements and sounds designed to make the space come to live.

The site was captured by a team of National Geographic photographers, and it can be set as a backdrop for watching Disney+ content underneath a nighttime aurora. The images for the Immersive Environment were captured using photogrammetry and gigapixel panoramas.

"Since its inception, National Geographic has been at the forefront of photography and has led the way in using groundbreaking technology to tell stories that inspire a deeper connection to the natural world," said David Miller, EVP, National Geographic. "Creating this immersive environment was a natural next step for us to take to build on that legacy and to continue enabling audiences to experience the beauty of our natural world and see places they may never go to otherwise."

Disney is one of the new companies that have developed unique Immersive Environments for Vision Pro wearers. When the headset launched, Disney+ offered several viewing options, including scenes from Star Wars, the Marvel Avengers Tower, and Pixar films.

Along with the new Immersive Environment, Disney+ is launching several new 3D movies for Vision Pro, including Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man, and Ant-Man and the Wasp. These movies join other 3D movies such as The Little Mermaid, Frozen II, Coco, The Lion King, and more.

I would love a Vision device just for media consumption, like just to watch movies, especially 3D movies.

I'm quite positive on Vpro unlike too many others around here but- IMO- these periodic "coats of paint" are not really the way to make this thing roar.

* At launch, promising the Super Bowl for Vpro would have been HOT.
* A month later, "March Madness-VR" would have been HOT.
* A week+ ago, promising the Olympics-VR would have been HOT.
* A few weeks from now, promising NFL-ST-VR would be HOT.
* A few weeks after that, MLB Playoffs-VR would be HOT.
* NBA-VR package?
* NCAA-F package?

And these "deals" shouldn't be only about sports as not everyone is turned on to sports. There's plenty of other forms of entertainment that could be interesting with exclusively-for-VR versions. Think IMAX. Think of a deal with Fanthom events ('https://www.fathomevents.com/events/'). Broadway? Cirque? Live concerts? Etc.

But see the trend here? If Apples push is going to be mobile entertainment, make the deals to bring the big events to this thing. These little themes and similar are all lovely and nicely done but only novel for a short while and then the impact fades. A new one is "oh so cool" on first encounter and maybe still hanging on to some "cool" for encounter 2 & 3 but eventually it's just one of many... like new colors of paint in a new phone.

Entertainment content of (desirable) substance would favorably stir this pot well.

And, of course, it can't be only about a big TV for our faces. Bring on "the rest" (non-entertainment) uses... by fronting development (budget/talent/resources) to make this have a steady stream of wow... instead of seemingly running a "we're serious about games"-like "build it and they will come" model (waiting for others to bring the wow). Apple has the money but the spend doesn't necessarily end with a launch in some cases... like this one... but probably needs comparable effort to getting it to market made AFTER the launch.

WBD needs to take note. The Game of Thrones dungeon is getting old. They should honestly just do the living room from Entourage.
Firmly agree! I'm not even some GOT fan but would maybe even use it if it was sharp and nice but it really isn't, def not compared to Apple's or Disney's (which are really good, so this news is exciting).

And, OMG, brilliant idea for an "Entourage" one, lol. WB needs more, is really the point.
