Apple Announces Next Step Towards Achieving 2030 Environmental Goal

Apple today announced it has committed up to 720 million yuan (nearly $100 million) towards accelerating the development of clean energy sources in China, as part of the company's goal of transitioning its supply chain to 100% renewable energy by 2030.

The investment will go towards the second phase of the China Clean Energy Fund, which aims to add approximately 550,000 megawatt-hours of wind and solar capacity to China's grid each year, according to Apple. The first phase added more than a gigawatt of new wind and solar projects across the country, the company said.

Apple's overall goal is to become completely carbon neutral across its entire business, manufacturing supply chain, and product life cycle by 2030. More details about this plan are available on Apple's environment page.

In related news, Apple CEO Tim Cook is currently visiting China, and he has been sharing some photos from his trip on his Weibo account. Cook is once again attending the annual China Development Forum in Beijing, and reports said he described Chinese artificial intelligence platform DeepSeek as "excellent" while there.

As part of this pro-China campaign, Apple also announced it is donating to help expand rural teacher training programs in China.

I'll probably regret engaging in this conversation, but I don't see why Apple making efforts to be more environmentally friendly is apparently so outrageous to some people, even if some aspects are perhaps superficial. Like even if you don't really care about future generations having an inhabitable Earth, how is Apple putting in some effort harming your life in any way? Okay, fine, no leather iPhone cases… boo hoo.

Nobody cares about this. We just care about good products.
Unfortunately, that type of thinking is what got us into the mess that we are in now.

Earth is our home. We should have as much pride taking care of it as we do with our personal homes and businesses.

I care about it... I think making a great product that has zero negative impacts on the environment is a great product itself.

That is excellent news. All 200 of Apples suppliers have major China presence. Getting them to go green, is a noble objective

Wow. Quite an angry Monday morning bunch of folks. Can't we be happy that a few companies are actually doing a bit to possibly help the environment for future generations?

Look at the positive. It's not your money they are giving away, and what's the worst that can happen - improvement to rural education and energy technologies?

I care about it. Honestly they should be doing more (as should everyone else). The greatest benefactors of capitalism and global trade should be doing the most to address the negative impacts that have arisen from it.

Climate denialism doesn’t make climate change a non-existential threat.

This is not a critique of you, as I don’t know or really care about your politics, but even xenophobes who only care about blocking immigration should care about climate change because it’s quickly becoming one of the biggest factors behind human migration. If they don’t want people coming to their country, don’t make the asylum seeker’s country unlivable. Just common sense that isn’t exercised often enough when destabilizing regimes or making the equator too hot to live/turning areas barren. Climate change impacts us all regardless of values or political beliefs.
