iPhone 16 Drives Apple's India Sales Despite Sixth Place Ranking

Apple took sixth place in India's smartphone market during the second quarter of the year, according to new data from Canalys. The country's overall market rebounded with 7% year-over-year growth, reaching a total of 39 million units shipped.

Apple iPhone 16 family lineup
The iPhone 16 series drove Apple's performance, accounting for over 55% of the company's shipments in the quarter. The data suggests that users have been keen to upgrade to Apple's latest flagship devices, but older models like the iPhone 15 and iPhone 13 continued attracting buyers across lower price points.

However, Apple's latest entry-level edition to the lineup, the iPhone 16e, appears to have struggled to gain traction after its February launch. Canalys analyst Sanyam Chaurasia said that consumers in India questioned the device's single-camera design and the company's largely unfulfilled Apple Intelligence promises, which hampered its market appeal.

Apart from Samsung, it is Chinese brands that continue to dominate the Indian market. Apple's stiff competition was led by vivo, which took 21% market share and registered impressive 31% growth. Samsung followed at 16%, while OPPO and Xiaomi tied for third with 13% each, and realme rounded out the top five with 9% share.

Canalys (now part of Omdia) projects a modest decline for the full-year 2025, owing to an overall subdued consumer desire to upgrade phones before the festive season in Indiam when promotions and marketing campaigns ramp up. Apple's mixed sales performance figures for the quarter follow recent efforts to expand its retail presence in India, with stores opening in Mumbai and New Delhi last year.

Meanwhile, Apple is continuing to increase exports from the country to diversify its supply chain and reduce its dependence on China. The growth in iPhone manufacturing has significantly impacted India's export economy, and smartphones have become the country's top export to the United States.

Nope. Wrong on all counts.
You have to be so much deluded to not accept current Apple's shortcomings.

Apple manufactures/assembles in India, takes advantage of PLI schemes (Production linked initiative) of the Indian govt to save on taxes and gets various subsidies. Yet they sell iPhone for higher price in India than US. Especially the Pro models.

Also compared to $1000 androids, Apple is
1. Behind in Camera tech
2. Behind in Wifi tech
3. Behind in GPU tech
4. Behind in Screen tech
5. Behind in Battery tech
6. Behind in 5G Modem tech. They purposely used low end SD X72 modem in 16 Pro series so that their new in-house modem found in 16e doesn't look half as bad it already is. While all competent Androids are rocking SD X80 and soon X85.

Also, Apple failed it's own liquid glass and is now reduced to "Frosted Glass" in latest iOS 26 DB3 beta. Which is almost the same UI material like iOS 18 but just looks uglier and crappier. Let's see how much more of liquid they remove in today's DB4.

All these things collectively lead me to believe that Apple has lost it's charm and they are no longer at the Apex of Tech pyramid. If the above things don't start ringing alarm bells in their UFO campus, then I don't know what else will and we will see a slow and painful decline of the company.

Good to hear about an increase in sales in India. Think with the Pro models being manufactured in the country, the import duty on these models should go away and the price should be corrected. That should further help drive the sales in the region.

For a large part of its history, Apple has NOT been a leader in specs.
Its value has been based on the combo of design, UI, features, and ecosystem.

Whether that's similarly compelling in the future as most products become even more mature and commodities, who knows.
So there could be a decline, however, the logic is different than yours.

For a large part of its history, Apple has NOT been a leader in specs.
To be fair, Apple prides itself to be so with technologies like Apple Silicon, phone cameras, and Face ID, and at least originally with component integration in the iPhone 4-6 era. Look at how many specs they emphasize in their launch events. And the Vision Pro wouldn’t be what it is if Apple hadn’t aimed for better specs than existing VR headsets. So it’s really a mix.

Its value has been based on the combo of design, UI, features, and ecosystem.
What people are critical about lately is that Apple’s design and UI is improving less (and rather declining in some ways) than their competitors are in the smartphone space. So the perceived relative value is declining.
