The new software can be downloaded on eligible iPads over-the-air by going to Settings > General > Software Update.

iPadOS 26.1 reintroduces Slide Over, a multitasking feature that was removed with the multitasking overhaul in ‌iPadOS 26‌.

Slide Over works alongside the window-based multitasking functionality in ‌iPadOS 26‌, so you can open up multiple app windows and still swipe over to quickly access a Slide Over app. Only one Slide Over app is supported at a time in iPadOS 26.1, and the feature is accessible by tapping on the green window resizing button and choosing Enter Slide Over.

iPadOS 26.1 also includes almost all of the new features that are in iOS 26.1, such as a toggle to reduce Liquid Glass transparency and Apple Intelligence support for new languages. Apple's release notes for the update are below.

Apple's release notes are below.

- Slide Over lets you keep a window on top of other windows, and easily hide off screen when not in use
- Resizable windows in Slide Over let you choose your preferred size and aspect ratio

- Option to let you choose where local capture files are saved

Bring back Split View when? Yes I know you can do it with windowed mode but its a lot more faffing around compared to what Split View used to be

It’s nothing like the old Split View, as long as you need to enter windowed mode. The iPad had a perfect multitasking system for a tablet, and it has been ruined with iPadOS 26.

Chill is a good update just a bit late
I just miss the old split screen with all of my lesser used apps in slideover. It was multitasking heaven for me.

This is the single reason why I haven’t upgraded to os26. I use Split View daily, it’s super quick AND I can also four finger swipe between apps. In os26 you cannot do both but have to choose either.

Can one turn off the pointless "glass" border around the whole thing?

Goodness gracious.
What are we doing here, Apple?

How about adding a border around the border also?
You know .. to help me "focus on my content".

Why is everyone spreading false information constantly. Split View IS NOT GONE. It just requires a few extra taps to get there. Annoying? Yes. But it's still very much possible to have two apps side-by-side. Stop spreading false info!
Accomplishing having two Apps side by side, one way or another with a few more taps ≠ "Split View" the feature.

There's a difference there and the details of implementation and ease of use make up that difference.

It's sort of like PiP as a feature or ..."with just some more work you can resize a browser window and turn off the chrome and get the same effect".
