How Much RAM Will the iPhone 18 Pro Have? Here's What Rumors Say

While the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are still around eight months away, multiple sources have already commented on how much RAM the devices will have.

In a blog post last year, Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that he expected all of the new iPhone models released later this year to be equipped with 12GB of RAM. That would include the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and iPhone Fold, and it would match the 12GB of RAM included in the iPhone 17 Pro models.

In a research note last week, obtained by MacRumors, analyst Jeff Pu agreed that the iPhone 18 Pro models and iPhone Fold will have 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM.

It has been rumored that even the standard iPhone 18 will have 12GB of RAM, which would be an increase over the 8GB of RAM in the standard iPhone 17.

Here is how much RAM is in the latest iPhones:

  • iPhone 17: 8GB
  • iPhone 17 Pro: 12GB
  • iPhone 17 Pro Max: 12GB
  • iPhone Air: 12GB

Here is how much RAM is expected in the next iPhones:

  • iPhone 18: 12GB
  • iPhone 18 Pro: 12GB
  • iPhone 18 Pro Max: 12GB
  • iPhone Fold: 12GB

Apple is expected to release the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in September, but the standard iPhone 18 is not expected to be announced until around March 2027, as Apple is reportedly shifting to a new two-phase launch strategy.

For the iPhone 18 Pro's A20 Pro chip, RAM will reportedly be integrated directly onto the chip's wafer with the CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine, rather than being adjacent to the chip and connected with a silicon interposer. This could boost the RAM's performance and efficiency, especially for Apple Intelligence tasks.

Apple tends to stick with the same RAM capacity for two to three years, so I doubt they will be upgrading the RAM again until 2028 and even then it may not be 16GB as Apple seems to love using odd amounts.

Years between RAM upgrades

iPhone 3G (128MB → 256MB), 1 year
iPhone 4 (256MB → 512MB), 2 years
iPhone 5 (512MB → 1GB), 2 years
iPhone 6s / 6s Plus (1GB → 2GB), 3 years
iPhone 7 Plus (2GB → 3GB), 1 year
iPhone XS / XS Max (3GB → 4GB), 1 year
iPhone 12 Pro / 12 Pro Max (4GB → 6GB), 3 years
iPhone 15 Pro / 15 Pro Max (6 GB → 8GB), 3 years
iPhone 16 / 16 Plus (6GB → 8GB), 1 year
iPhone 17 Air / 17 Pro / 17 Pro Max (8GB → 12GB), 2 years
I’m just hoping we move on from usb 2 from 2000 and usb 3 from 2008.

I was still in elementary school. Apple has this weird thing where they have the most advanced tech and most archaic tech in 1 phone.

Other than rumors and others speculating, there’s nothing to see here.

Apple has a long history of equipping devices with bare minimum ram.

If there was any change, I would imagine them going back to DDR4 RAM to shave down the price, but upping the quantity to 16 GB to draw attention in another direction.

Complexity. iPhone OS 1 didn't even have an App Store. When we did eventually get apps, most of them were just websites in a wrapper. The phone had only one spectrum of Wi-Fi to deal with and only one carrier to deal with. It didn't have GPS. The screens were much smaller and non-Retina, so there were far less pixels to drive. It didn't have copy/paste. No MMS either. No biometrics. No selfie cam. Not even a second camera lens. Just a much simpler device.

Liquid Glass is the newest complexity. And Apple Intelligence before that. And so on...

To be the everything computer in your pocket, it needs more resources. In a couple years it will have 16 GB, then in a few more... 24? 32?
