Desktop Search - Google, Microsoft, Others...

Today Google launched their version of a desktop searching tool for Windows XP/2000 computers. This Yahoo news article describes the new tool which has been under development at Google for about a year.

Readers will remember that Apple is launching its own version of an enhanced desktop search called Spotlight which will be bundled with the next major revision of Mac OS X (Tiger).

Enhanced desktop searching appears to be a focus for many companies in the coming months. eWeek reports that AOL will be launching their own version to compete with Microsoft's upcoming offerings. While Apple's version of this technology will not compete directly against the Google/AOL/Microsoft counterparts, it does allow Mac OS X to remain competitive with similar technologies becoming available for the Windows platform.
