Apple Accepting Red Cross Donations for Alberta Fires Relief

Apple is now accepting donations to the Canadian Red Cross through iTunes in Canada to help people affected by large wildfires in the Fort McMurray, Alberta area.

iTunes donations to the Canadian Red Cross can be made in the amount of $5, $10, $25, $50, $100, or $200. iTunes Store credit cannot be used to make a donation and no tax receipt will be provided.

The Fort McMurray wildfires began on May 1 and have since grown to reach over 200,000 hectares in size, damaging communities and forcing over 80,000 residents to evacuate to southern cities such as Edmonton and Calgary.

Apple facilitates Red Cross donations to support many relief efforts worldwide, including for the recent earthquakes in Japan and Ecuador.

It's great that Apple is encouraging people to donate, but unless Apple plans to match donations people are better off donating to the Red Cross directly (link below) as the Federal Government of Canada will be matching all individual donations and you will get a tax receipt as well.

Give to local Alberta Charities instead. Support the local food bank. Never forget, not giving a dime to Red Cross again:

Apple, please find a new outlet for donations. It's great to want to help, but help by trying to ensure more of the funds actually go to helping those in need. More reputable and effective charitable organizations exist.

I wonder Tim and his buddies at Apple are donating themselves. :)
The way I understand it, Apple matches all employee contributions to any non-profit. Employees send the proof of donation to a contact at Apple who will match it. Pretty awesome program and something not happening when Steve was CEO.
