Halide Camera Team Launches Kino Pro Video App

The developers behind popular photography app Halide today announced the launch of Kino, an app designed for capturing cinematic video. Kino has the tools that professionals need while also providing guidance to amateur videographers.

Kino offers a one-tap video recording feature with support for a range of color presets. The Instant Grade feature allows users to choose presets created by experts or import their own LUTs. By applying color grading while recording, Kino saves time by removing the need for editing.

An AutoMotion feature helps users capture cinematic movement in a shot by using a 180-degree shutter angle by default. When enough ambient light is available, the Auto label will turn green to indicate that it is an ideal time to capture motion.

While the Kino interface is designed to be simple to use, there are a number of pro tools that can be selected. There are options for adjusting exposure with RV adjustment and AE, and WB lock, or there is a full manual mode for control over shutter speed and ISO.

The app includes quick access tools for adjusting resolution, framerate, encoding, and more, plus there is a level grid, RBG waveform for adjusting exposure, and focus peaking for changing focus. Kino is able to store video recordings in the Files app instead of the Photos app for easier video management.

For those new to video recording, there are a series of lessons that can be used to learn all of the available features that are in Kino.

Kino can be downloaded from the App Store for $9.99, a discount of 50 percent off of the standard price. iOS 17 is required. [Direct Link]

Yes. Don’t waste your money on this. Don’t know why MR is advertising for them.
Because it's a new app?

No, it’s not a “bargain”. Please explain what features are missing from BlackMagic before promoting this expensive app.
We include what's easily $25+ in presets from pro colorists, for one.

they'll probably pull a Halide there too, make app free in a year or two and require a sub for new features
We added an FAQ item about that, if you are curious:

Your other app, Halide, is a subscription product now. Will that happen to Kino, too?
Good question! The honest answer is that we don't know.

What we think is more important to answer is what it would mean to you if we make Kino free with an optional subscription or one-time purchase in the future, like what we did with Halide.

Let's look at Halide: the app launched seven years ago, and started at $2,99. When we rolled out the second version of Halide three years later, we decided to give this update to everyone who had bought the app for free — and give years of updates on top of that, also for free!

All Halide users who ever bought the app can use it for life, along with all the features they paid for and over two years of updates on top of that. That's true to this day.

Last year, we started offering an option for those users to upgrade to get new updates with extra features. But that's completely optional. The app, and all its features will always keep working, will still get compatibility updates for new iPhones, etc.

We try to do the best for our users at all times, and part of that is honoring the people that supported us from the beginning. In all of our apps' history for the last 7 years in business, we've always taken care of our users first.

In brief: we don't know, but if we do, we'll make sure that you are taken care of, and if you buy the app now you'll own it for as long as it's around.

I find it strange that BlackMagic is not even mentioned in the article. It's better, a known stable release and Free!

Fun fact: 'kino' is the word for 'cinema' in Russian, Ukrainian and Bulgarian. I'm guessing the developers hail from one of those countries...
… and in German, „das Kino“, = movie theatre
