Apple TV's broadcast of the Los Angeles Dodgers vs. San Francisco Giants game this Friday will incorporate the brand new iPhone 18 Pro.

More than a dozen iPhone 18 Pro devices will be placed throughout Dodger Stadium during the game, according to Apple. The devices will capture live gameplay from unique vantage points and scenes from around the ballpark, including batting practice, player introductions, dugout perspectives, and the atmosphere throughout the stadium.

"iPhone will offer unique perspectives that would be difficult to achieve with traditional broadcast cameras thanks to its small footprint," said Apple.

Apple already placed four iPhone 17 Pro devices in Fenway Park last year to capture footage for a Boston Red Sox vs. Detroit Tigers broadcast on Apple TV, and one of them ended up in the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.

Apple TV offers a weekly MLB doubleheader called Friday Night Baseball as part of a subscription — there is no additional cost to watch the games. Watch the Dodgers take on the Giants this Friday, September 18 at 7 p.m. Pacific Time.

I like Apple. I like iPhones. I like baseball.

I really *don't* like being assaulted with Apple promotion all throughout a baseball broadcast. I guess it's unavoidable but it's really annoying.

(Although that's probably not as bad as last night's ESPN broadcast of Mets vs. Orioles, where they were talking to Pete Alonso while he was on the field... and he basically had to stop mid-sentence to field a grounder. That was nuts. How about letting the players play?)

I'll take that over being assaulted with ads for sports betting apps.

I believe live. Isn't that how it was positioned last year?

Yes, they incorporated the iPhone 17 Pro footage in the live broadcast from Fenway last year. Trouble was, even though the quality was OK, the iPhones are no match for the traditional broadcast cameras, so the experience was quite jarring.

Certainly felt like 30 second promos throughout the game and were not a value add (unlike the recent Vision Pro broadcasts, which are amazing).

Apple best show the iPhone footage during breaks in play. When it comes time for major moments, I want to see it on the best cameras around.

I'm interested in how they're pulling that off. Are the iPhones feeding the video stream live during the event, or are they prerecording the footage and later mixing it in with the broadcast?

Apple didn't pay massively for broadcast rights to not use it for marketing!

I guess Apple is trying to demonstrate their improved picture and video quality. I rather see people filming short films with the iPhone than watch a baseball game but that's just me.
