iPhone 18 Pro Max Test Shows Much Faster Charging From 0% to 100%

Apple said the new iPhone 18 Pro models are capable of faster USB-C charging compared to the iPhone 17 Pro models, and a new video shared by the YouTube channel Xiaobai's Tech Reviews offers a closer look at the year-over-year improvement.

Black iPhone 18 Pro
As spotted by the account Ice Universe, the video reveals that the iPhone 18 Pro Max can go from 0% to 100% battery life in as little as 55 minutes with a capable charger, compared to 81 minutes for the iPhone 17 Pro Max. In other words, the iPhone 18 Pro Max can be "fully" charged 26 minutes faster compared to the previous generation (iPhones continue to receive a slow trickle of power even after they show 100% battery life).

In line with Apple's advertised claim, the video showed that the iPhone 18 Pro Max can reach 50% battery life in just 15 minutes, down from 20 minutes for the iPhone 17 Pro models.

The smaller iPhone 18 Pro should have similar charging speeds.

During the video's test, the iPhone 18 Pro Max reached a peak charging speed of 52W for the first 12 minutes of the charging session. Last year, the iPhone 17 Pro Max achieved a peak charging speed of 36W in a separate test conducted by ChargerLAB. As always, charging slows down later in a session to prevent overheating.

Exactly how useful these improvements are to you will depend on your charging habits. If you mostly charge your iPhone overnight, then faster charging is obviously not very beneficial. But if you find yourself topping up your iPhone throughout the day, then saving nearly a half hour on a 0% to 100% charge may be meaningful to you.

Apple's tech specs state that to achieve the fastest charging speeds on the iPhone 18 Pro models, you need to use a power adapter capable of 60W or higher with Adjustable Voltage Supply (AVS). Apple sells a charger that meets this description: its 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max, which is priced at $39 on its U.S. online store.

The video referenced is in Chinese.

Actively managed cell phone batteries are not in the same realm as actively managed ev batteries with sophisticated cooling systems. Stop promulgating they are equivalent.
What in the actual WHAT are you talking about? 🤔 Who said anything about this “equivalent” straw man are you stepped into this conversation to blather about?

All I wrote is:

There is no harm done to a phone battery by charging ‘too fast’. Same as for EVs. They both prevent it entirely.

Heat-stress/damage from fast charging is a non-issue with phones, because they will not fast charge above the safe limit for the battery’s current temperature. (Which is also true for EV batteries and any other device with a battery management system.)

‘Fast charging is hard on the battery’ is just a myth people trot out, a boogeyman that never affects a user’s real-world battery health.

The teensy differences in charging fast-hot vs longer-not-as-hot are dwarfed by the real world use factors in my original post.

Interesting but usually you don't get something for nothing - does rapid charging damage the battery (e.g., by generating more heat)? Genuinely asking, for I do not know the answer.
Basically zero problem, as has been demonstrated by EV fast/slow charging comparisons.

The only things that have a material impact on battery longevity are:

1. Charge cycles. Which is just simple use.
2. Sitting at very high SoC for a long time, especially at high battery temperatures. Which has been solved for years.

iPhones were late to the party with the second one, but a couple years ago, they finally started charging to 80% (where #2 is basically zero-issue), and then waiting until just before you regularly woke up to finish charging to 100%. This is massively better for the battery than letting it sit at 100 from shortly after you plugged it in at night.

(Aside: The original 80mi Leaf EVs learned this the hard way, they never told the user not to leave it at 100, and so they degraded substantially. All the other EVs managed this with the user or scheduled charging to arrive at the desired percentage.)

Fast Charging was always a theoretical issue, but in real world analysis over a decade plus, it’s shown to be basically zero issue as well. EVs have had many thousands of vehicles do exclusively extremely fast charging, and many thousands that do exclusively slow charging. Basically no difference.

It’s essentially a push between charging faster/hotter vs longer/slightly-less-hot. And both effects are a flea-fart in a hurricane vs factors #1 & #2 above.

As long as the battery isn’t too hot, it’s fine. But the batteries all have thermal sensors which limit charging speeds for each temp, keeping them happy no matter what you do. 👍

Just don’t get this need for charging quick. We needed this 10 years ago when the battery didn’t last half a day, now you can get 1 day plus I don’t see the obsession!

Faster charging - faster battery SoH degradation... faster you wan't to upgrade.
I'm using only "slow" chargers 90% of the time, up to 10W for 13/14/15/16/17 Pro's devices should be like that.
Thats a normal charging and how it supposed to be!

Are you all getting the Apple charger with AVS? I thought my 65W Anker Nano II would do the same, but apparently this ultra fast charging requires AVS.

Update: I ordered the Apple one. Here are the technical details I found (I'm very ignorant to charging specs and how it works):
The Anker 65W Nano II advertises fixed USB-PD outputs of 5V/3A, 9V/3A, 15V/3A, and 20V/3.25A. Anker documents PPS support, but PPS and AVS are different programmable-voltage mechanisms. AVS allows the iPhone to negotiate a more precisely controlled voltage rather than forcing the phone to choose among those fixed voltage rails. Apple's adapter supports AVS ranges including 15-20V at 2A and 9-15V at 2.67A. One test reports the iPhone 18 Pro maintaining roughly 18V through much of the high-speed portion of the charge. That's a voltage that the Nano II cannot supply as a fixed PD profile.

Again, I know nothing about this, but based on that alone, I went with the Apple charger to be safe.

I never understood who wants to have a phone attached to a charger for 8 hours? I just top up whenever the phone is low on battery or when I know I will go out for longer, so the faster it charges, the better obviously.
So…

…you don’t just charge your phone while you sleep? Is that 8-hour charging session eating into your normal usage…?
