Anthropic Launches Claude Opus 5.5 With Fable-Level Performance at a Lower Price

Anthropic today launched Claude Opus 5.5, which it says is the first model in a new 5.5 model family. Opus 5.5 performs at the level of Claude Fable 5.1 on most work, but costs 40 percent less to run than Opus 5.

According to Anthropic, Opus 5.5 is a "major step up" from Opus 5 with improvements in performance and safety. Opus 5.5 is comparable to Mythos 5.1 in biology and cybersecurity, so Anthropic is launching it with safeguards similar to those on Fable 5.1. Opus 5.5 also generates output over 30 percent faster than Opus 5.

On benchmarks shared by Anthropic, Opus 5.5 surpassed Fable 5.1 on agentic coding, knowledge work, computer use, visual chart recognition, and multidisciplinary reasoning. Anthropic says the model communicates more naturally than prior models, putting important information at the front of a response so it's easier to understand at a glance. It is less likely to use jargon or idiosyncratic phrases, and it follows the writing rules it's given.

Claude Opus 5.5 is available on all platforms as of today. With the launch of Opus 5.5, Anthropic is raising the five-hour usage limits on Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise plans. Subscribers have also received a rate limit reset that can be used anytime between now and October 22.

Anthropic Says Users Can't Be Needlessly Cruel to Claude

Thursday October 8, 2026 2:53 pm PDT by
Anthropic today updated its usage policy (via The Verge) to bar users from subjecting Claude to "sustained and needless abusive or cruel behavior." Anthropic says the abuse rule is meant to apply only in extreme cases, where users "repeatedly act cruelly" toward the AI models with "no discernible purpose." The rule does not apply to ordinary user frustration, pushback, dark creative themes,...

Anthropic Launches Claude Duet, a Proactive AI Agent

Wednesday October 21, 2026 1:52 pm PDT by
Anthropic today introduced Claude Duet, its answer to Meta's Muse agent and OpenAI's Dots agent. Like Dots and Muse, it is a proactive agent that "reaches out before you ask." Claude Duet connects to your apps and suggests things that need your attention. It completes tasks and can work in the cloud without local access to a computer. As with Muse and Dots, Duet has a virtual machine with...

RIP, MacBook Ultra

Monday October 19, 2026 9:37 am PDT by
Apple today sent out invites for an experience in Los Angeles on Wednesday, October 28, and the "Pro and tell" tagline on the invitation likely means that the rumored MacBook models with touch-enabled OLED displays will stick with MacBook Pro branding instead of the once-rumored "MacBook Ultra" name. The long-rumored "iPhone Ultra" ended up being named iPhone Duo, so speculation that Apple...

I have no intention of paying for AI. If it becomes necessary to use, I’ll run it locally. I’ll take whatever hits I must to avoid paying into the infinite growth machine that’s helped make everything so expensive.

I wouldn’t mind paying if and when it actually becomes useful. Right now, in the consumer space, it’s nothing but a novelty.
This is just a lack of imagination at this point. If you're not already looking for the possibilities to integrate AI in to your normal everyday personal workflows you're pretty far behind and I say that as someone who is definitely behind.

I know there's a lot of novelty examples on YT and X that make it seem pretty trivial but one of my main workflows right now is a personal wiki where i can drop a post or a video from and have it automatically build a learning and deployment plan that I can follow in my lab without having to cross-reference a dozen different pages to get to that point.

Lol, I’ll gladly stay “behind”. It sounds like a rat-race into a nightmare world à la idiocracy.

Being “behind” on many things isn’t as big of a deal as the marketing teams at these companies would like you to believe.

Sometimes being behind actually puts you ahead.

I skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been

Sure, let’s waste time search for ways to force this stuff into systems that already work just so we can spend money on unreliable outcomes. Sounds super smart and not at all like falling for a scam.

Stop this AI madness! We need RAM, SSDs back pre-AI pricing:-) We need PS6 for 700$, not 2000$.
