Apple Planning to Launch Products Faster and More Often

Apple CEO John Ternus is undertaking efforts to restructure the company to accelerate product development and introduce new products more frequently, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

Ternus apparently wants Apple to "broaden its range of devices and create a leaner organization with a greater focus on engineering." One proposal under consideration is to rely less on Apple's traditional spring and fall product release cycles, and introduce new devices more quickly and throughout the year. Ternus has also purportedly indicated that Apple must become "more experimental" to remain competitive in the era of artificial intelligence.

Other plans include eliminating some middle-management positions to reduce corporate hierarchy that separates engineers from senior executives. Ternus believes "Apple should hire fewer people, ask more of its existing engineers, and reduce organizational bloat." During a presentation, he reportedly showed a slide detailing annual headcount growth and argued that the "company should be accomplishing more with fewer employees."

Ternus is also seeking new ways to generate more revenue from existing products amid slowing growth in the company's services business. The launch of new services has also been discussed. To cut costs, early planning meetings for 2027 have seen reductions in planned budget increases, flat staffing levels, and reduced marketing spending.

Gurman cautioned that the changes to Apple's long-standing practices will be challenging and could take years to achieve. There are already indications of changes taking place, with dismissals of directors and engineering program managers taking place in the past two weeks.

Those employees were given just weeks to find other positions within the company, and those who do not will be laid off. Other recent cutbacks have focused on the teams responsible for Siri, Vision Pro, AI-related software engineering, and Fitness+. Some employees believe that further layoffs are possible later this year and early next year.

Managers within Apple told Gurman that there is a sense of pressure to move faster, with more "hectic" and demanding "hands-on" work. Product development groups are "being pushed to deliver more products, more frequently and on shorter timelines."

Mark Gurman: Apple Made 'Major Mistake' With iPhone Duo Pre-Orders

Sunday October 18, 2026 7:33 am PDT by
Despite knowing that the iPhone Duo would face "severe supply constraints" due to manufacturing challenges, Apple chose to begin iPhone Duo pre-orders on Friday instead of waiting until it had more inventory ready, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. In his Power On newsletter today, he called this decision a "major mistake." "Let me cut to the chase: Apple made a major mistake here," he...

Considering the state of Apples software sometimes, I'm not sure this is a good idea?

His first priority really should be to fix their software divisions.. especially considering the prices they charge for their products.

Reducing the barrier between engineering and C-suite is a good thing - but cutting costs by firing talented engineers is a bad thing.
Will be interesting to see how this plays out. Ternus needs to focus on software quality, though. Not sure if accelerating product development will hurt the quality of software...

Usually, doing more with less is a recipe for burnout. But what I think Apple's teams need (especially software) are more DRIs or 'directly responsible individuals', because sometimes in a large organization, when something is everyone's responsibility then it is no one's responsibility. Apple needs people who are empowered to control and fix the things they have direct ownership over.

Although Apple's product release cycle has gotten predictable and boring by the end of the Cook era, I'm a bit concerned about this report.

First, Apple's mantra has generally been to get things right even if it doesn't mean being first. As others have noted, accelerating product development is likely to produce more hardware issues and software bugs.

I'm also concerned about the emphasis on engineers. Apple became successful by focusing on design, and the engineering had to be innovative to keep up. That obviously went too far at the end of the Ive era, but I don't want a bunch of over-engineered, ugly Apple products.

A low bar to clear, but very good news indeed.

They need to iterate and update much faster than they traditionally have.
Do they? Why?
